CHAPTER FIFTEEN
As consciousness returned, I saw a flash of a picture in my mind’s eye. An old man sat with a child on his lap. Years later, I saw those same eyes. They stayed the same throughout his life. Now as a man, I knew that the boy held the fate of thousands of lives in his hands.
My mind screamed, Wake up!
Gasping with shock, I nearly flew off a molded plastic cot. Opening my eyes, I flinched with pain in my eyes thanks to bright lights on the ceiling. Before I could understand where I was, though, I went into violent shivers.
My body remembered suffocating in pain-filled cold and blackness. It remembered the ice ripping at my chest. Somewhere in my mind, I realized that I didn’t have my jacket either.
I lay there shivering on that hard cot, hissing at the cold deep within my chest. But finally, I could feel a sense of warmth slowly return. I found myself able to move. But just as I did, harsh waves of dizziness slammed me back down onto the cot.
I groaned with the vertigo slamming through my head. All I could do was lay there, silently begging for the world to stop flying around my head in circles. Worse, I could feel hot, burning bile deep in my chest and throat.
“It will pass, Vaughn. Don’t try to stand until then.” I heard Natalya say from somewhere.
Her voice echoed off glass, concrete, and ceramics. I could feel it in my head as my body recovered. I took deep breaths, and with each breath, my balance began to recover. After I could move again, all I felt was a distant headache in my sinuses.
But it was just that. I took it as a hint to be careful. For the moment, at least, I could ignore the feeling. Continuing to take deep breaths, I opened my eyes, expecting to wake up in a prison cell. I didn’t expect to find myself on a set for a science-fiction movie.
Everything was white plastic. The floor and ceiling were made of a hard form of bright white plastic. Even the walls were made of rough feeling white square-shaped plastic tiles. Semi-transparent white plastic covered even the lights of the ceiling.
I muttered, “And people say the oil market is tanking. Ha.”
Someone watched far too many James Bond movies. But what made it hilarious was that the front of the cell was a full wall of what looked like two-inch thick glass that parted in the middle.
“Oh, yes, let’s put the hero with sonic powers inside a cell of plastic and glass.”
Across from my cell, I saw someone move in a lit cell. Natalya. With a nod, I took a deep breath to shatter the cell. Natalya’s eyes widened. She yelled, “No! Don’t do it!”
Too late. White-hot pain rammed through my head as the sinus headache turned into an intense feeling of molten metal poured on my brain. With a gasp, I fell to my knees. Unfocused, the buzz faded.
